What are platforms?

Platforms called Marine Autonomous Systems are sensor-equipped vehicles that operate at sea without direct human control. They include Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs), designed to collect high-quality data in different operating environments and across a wide range of missions.

What do platforms offer?

Autonomous platforms offer a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to ocean observation. They also enable monitoring of the ocean over large areas and long periods of time.

How do platforms fit into the FMRI vision?

The FMRI vision is for a networked fleet of autonomous platforms that provide a transformative national capability for measuring the marine environment. This capability will enable new and different approaches to marine research for more responsive, evidence-based decision-making for environmental stewardship and sustainable use of marine resources.
